A catch basin is a surface inlet — a grated box set flush with the grade — that collects standing water or runoff and routes it through underground pipe to a discharge point. They're particularly effective in low spots where water consistently pools and where a french drain alone won't work because there's no subsurface flow to intercept.
When a Catch Basin Is the Right Solution
Catch basins work best when water is collecting at the surface in a defined low point — such as the end of a driveway, a depression in the yard, or at the base of a slope. Unlike a french drain, which intercepts subsurface water as it moves through the soil, a catch basin captures water after it has already concentrated at the surface. They're often used in combination with french drains and underground pipe to create a complete drainage system.
Installation and Maintenance
We set the basin at grade level with adequate elevation to ensure water flows into it naturally, connect it to underground PVC pipe, and route the pipe to an appropriate outlet. Catch basins require periodic cleaning — leaves, silt, and debris collect in the basin over time and can reduce flow. We'll show you how to maintain the basin after installation to keep it performing correctly.
